Is all the “Kindle-ing” starting a fire?

We hear a lot of talk about going green and reducing your carbon footprint these days, and for the most part we assume the basics. Recycle, switch to energy star appliances, and conserve water and electricity whenever possible… nothing out of the ordinary. Amazon.com has been offering a unique device since November 2007 that can help us go green when it comes to our reading habits. This is a way we can make a difference in a way we would have never guessed possible. The kindle is a hardware and software platform developed to read e-books and other digital media. This means that all of the print media and books we would have purchased and consequently used paper for can now be uploaded to your kindle. This is not only a huge convenience, but it is very environmentally friendly. Think about it, one device that could take the place of hundreds of thousands of pages of paper and save us money at the same time.
There are many different faces and possibilities for the kindle. It can be used for business or for pleasure, for a periodical or a novel. With such a wide variety of things that it can do, really anyone who currently subscribes to a periodical or avidly reads could find a use for this device. Introducing new applications for the kindle will also continue to grow its client base. Bringing the kindle into the classroom will also have a tremendous impact. Now instead of having to purchase textbooks, schools and students can have text books uploaded to their kindle. This save the environment and also saves us money. Textbooks are extremely expensive and quickly depreciate. With the kindle you avoid this depreciation. The kindle is better than online books as well because you can bring it to class with you and not have to depend on a computer or wireless connections. Educators are often weary of allowing the internet in the classroom because it can be a great distraction. With the kindle you can have the digital version of the book and nothing else for distractions. The kindle can be of use in business too. The device can read word and PDF files which means almost anything you would need can be accessed through this machine. Taking a kindle along to a meeting would look much more organized and professional then walking in with a stack of papers which will inevitably end up scattered all over the place. Referencing the kindle in a meeting will be much more quick and efficient then sitting there shuffling through papers to try and find a specific item. With the kindle you can mark the note and quickly reference back to it when needed. Furthermore utilizing the kindles read out loud feature to go over documents on your drive in is much safer than the alternative. The possibilities for the kindle are endless. Anyone can sell their work on amazon.com and have it be available for individuals to upload onto their devices. To draw a parallel what the iPod and iTunes did for aspiring musicians the kindle can do for aspiring writers. Put you work on amazon.com and let the people decide if it is worth purchasing. Put the fate of your work in the hands of many, not the hands of a few publishing executives. Who is to say that you do not have something of value that you have written that people will want to purchase.
